To ultrasound or not to ultrasound? That is the question. For most pregnant mamas, ultrasounds are just a given. As a natural mama, we want to avoid as many interventions as possible during pregnancy and birth. Some studies also found that when women had an ultrasound for dating they were less likely to be induced for post-term pregnancy. However, if you have a practitioner like a midwife who is ok with continuing to closely monitor a post-term pregnancy, this may not be an issue for you. Other studies have found that dating from the last menstrual period was just as accurate as dating from an ultrasound. Better yet, use our advanced due date calculator to determine a more accurate result than standard due date calculators.

Body language – basics and introduction Body language is a powerful concept which successful people tend to understand well. The study and theory of body language has become popular in recent years because psychologists have been able to understand what we ‘say’ through our bodily gestures and facial expressions, so as to translate our body language, revealing its underlying feelings and attitudes.
Body Language is also referred to as ‘non-verbal communications’, and less commonly ‘non-vocal communications’. The term ‘non-verbal communications’ tends to be used in a wider sense, and all these terms are somewhat vague. For the purposes of this article, the terms ‘body language’ and ‘non-verbal communications’ are broadly interchangeable.
If you carry out any serious analysis or discussion you should clarify the terminology in your own way to suit your purposes.

The week scan showing the mass left next to the foetus Image: Could not subscribe, try again laterInvalid Email A brave mum has told how she risked her own life to save her unborn baby after spotting a sinister black mass next to the foetus on a week scan. Mickayla Jordan-Smyth, 30, and her husband Craig, 27, stared aghast at the screen as they faced the terrifying possibility that the shapeless blob could be cancerous.
The screen showed “black holes all over” where the child was supposed to be, “like grapes on a stalk”. They were told that the mass could be a partial molar pregnancy, which could become cancerous — posing a risk to mother and baby. But the parents refused an abortion and remained adamant that the pregnancy should continue, despite Craig’s fears that he would lose both his wife and their baby. Mickayla gave birth via caesarian and woke up screaming ” I know my baby has died” before she was told the child had survived.

Doppler Ultrasound The doppler shift principle has been used for a long time in fetal heart rate detectors. Further developments in doppler ultrasound technology in recent years have enabled a great expansion in its application in Obstetrics, particularly in the area of assessing and monitoring the well-being of the fetus, its progression in the face of intrauterine growth restriction, and the diagnosis of cardiac malformations.
Doppler ultrasound is presently most widely employed in the detection of fetal cardiac pulsations and pulsations in the various fetal blood vessels. The “Doptone” fetal pulse detector is a commonly used handheld device to detect fetal heartbeat using the same doppler principle. Blood flow characteristics in the fetal blood vessels can be assessed with Doppler ‘flow velocity waveforms’.

First trimester ultrasound is performed in the first months of a pregnancy. Pregnancy ultrasounds are performed mainly using transabdominal ultrasound. For many women, especially after 8 weeks gestation, sufficient information about the baby may be obtained with transabdominal ultrasound only. However, in the early pregnancy, the developing embryo is very small at 6 weeks gestation, the baby is only mm long and a transvaginal ultrasound may be required to get a better image of the baby.
Transvaginal ultrasound is safe and commonly performed during all stages of pregnancy, including the first trimester. It will not harm you or your baby. Transabdominal ultrasound involves scanning through your lower abdomen. A small amount of ultrasound gel is put on the skin of the lower abdomen, with the ultrasound probe then scanning through this gel. The gel helps improve contact between the probe and your skin. Transvaginal ultrasound is an internal ultrasound.
It involves scanning with the ultrasound probe lying in the vagina. Transvaginal ultrasound usually produces better and clearer images of the female pelvic organs including the developing pregnancy, because the ultrasound probe lies closer to these structures. The transvaginal ultrasound probe is thin, about 2cm diameter. The probe is covered with a disposable protective sheath.
